DAY 1:
CUSCO – KM 104 – AGUAS CALIENTESInitially, we depart from your Cusco hotel for the captivating Brief Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Our journey begins with a bus ride to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. From there, we board a train for a scenic ride down the valley, arriving at the starting point of our Machu Picchu hike.
Our adventure begins at the banks of the Urubamba River, where we start our trek and gradually ascend to join the original Inca Trail at the Wiñay Wayna site. We then continue to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) before reaching the Machu Picchu citadel.
Throughout our trek, we will traverse a lush cloud forest rich in diverse plants, flowers, and bird species. With some luck, we may encounter local wildlife such as Viscachas (rabbit-like Chinchillas) or the elusive Spectacled Bear. This route provides some of the most breathtaking scenery on the Brief Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
In the late afternoon, we will arrive at the Sun Gate, where we’ll be rewarded with our first panoramic views of Machu Picchu nestled below the mountain ridge. The late-day lighting offers an excellent opportunity for stunning photographs. After taking in the views, we’ll descend from the Sun Gate and follow the well-preserved stone path to explore Machu Picchu, including the renowned “look-out point” overlooking the central part of the citadel.
Our day concludes with a descent to the town of Aguas Calientes in the valley below, where we’ll check into our hotel and enjoy dinner.
Accommodation: Golden Sunrise Machu Picchu Hotel *** or similar.
DAY 2:
MACHU PICCHUOn the second day, we will rise early to catch the first bus up to the Machu Picchu site, entering as soon as it opens. A 2-hour guided tour will follow, showcasing key locations such as altars and structures. This tour provides valuable insights into the history of Machu Picchu and the ancient people who once inhabited this remarkable site.
If you have obtained an additional permit to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, this is the ideal time to do so.
In the afternoon, we will board the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. From there, you will continue your journey back to Cusco by bus.
