DAY 1:
CUSCO – PUMAHUANCA – PUYOCThe Lares Trek in Peru commences in the charming village of Pumahuanca, nestled in the Sacred Valley. Our journey begins by ascending a secondary valley, covering approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) and climbing around 1150 meters (3773 feet) to reach the village of Puyoc. Along the way, we will explore the ancient Inca site of Pumahuanca and encounter the diverse native flora, fauna, and birdlife that thrive in this unique environment.
This particular route of the Lares Trek is less traveled by other tour companies, offering a tranquil and undisturbed experience. With minimal foot traffic, there is a good chance of observing local wildlife, including Viscachas—creatures resembling rabbit-like Chinchillas—and potentially even an Andean Fox.
Our overnight camp will be set up in Puyoc, located at an altitude of 4100 meters (13451 feet). Due to the high elevation and the arid conditions, temperatures can drop significantly during the dry season. Therefore, it is advisable to bring warm clothing, including gloves and a hat, to ensure comfort.

DAY 2:
PUYOC – YANACOCHA – CUNCANIToday features the most awe-inspiring segment of the Lares Trek in Peru, and it is relatively easier compared to the previous day’s trek. We will begin our journey from our campsite and embark on a 13 km (8 miles) trek to the village of Cuncani. Most of this trek is downhill, with the mountain pass encountered within the first 2 hours.
As we descend, we’ll be surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks and serene mountain lakes, including Yanacocha, also known as Black Water. We’ll also have the chance to see locals dressed in their vibrant traditional red attire. This part of the trek offers a unique cultural perspective distinct from the other side of the pass. Your guide will share insights into the local community and their way of life, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn some basic Quechua phrases to interact more meaningfully with the local inhabitants.
Accommodation: Campsite in Cuncani
DAY 3:
CUNCANI – LARESToday’s highlight of the Lares Trek in Peru is the cultural immersion with local communities. We’ll rise early to visit a local home, guided by our knowledgeable host, for an authentic experience with a native family.
The locals are warm and welcoming, showing genuine interest in our backgrounds. By now, you should be familiar with some Quechua phrases, which will help you start conversations and ask questions—often a source of joy and amusement for everyone involved. This is also an excellent opportunity to present any gifts you may have brought for the community and to purchase locally crafted alpaca goods, renowned throughout the region.
After leaving Cuncani, we will embark on a short 6 km (3.7 miles) journey to the Lares hot springs. Along the way, we will pass through charming villages where locals grow a variety of crops, such as quinoa and tarwi (Andean lupin).
Keep an eye out for flocks of Andean parrots flying overhead, recognizable by their distinctive calls. After a relaxing soak in the hot springs, we will travel by bus back to the Sacred Valley. From there, we will board a train to Machu Picchu.
