Overview

The 05 Day Choquequirao Trek – Choquequirao trekking offers an enthralling journey through the Apurimac canyon, leading to the remote and lesser-known “Lost City of the Incas.” Translated from Quechua, Choquequirao means “the Golden Cradle.” This site is believed to be where the last Inca rulers sought refuge after the fall of Cusco to the Spanish conquistadors. Often referred to as “The Sister of Machu Picchu,” this Inca archaeological wonder shares similarities with its more famous counterpart.

Throughout the trek, participants will be treated to breathtaking landscapes, rugged mountains, and secluded ancient villages, once revered by local ranchers in the previous century. The highlight is the remarkable Inca settlement perched atop the hills, constructed by the Mitimaes of Chachapoyas to pay homage to the esteemed Pachacutec.

Our trek officially commences at Capuliyoc, where we’ll embark on a two-hour hike to the “Abra of Capuliyoc” (2894 masl / 9,495 ft.) and enjoy our lunch there.

Following lunch, we’ll continue our descent for about 3 hours to reach Chiquiska (1,900 masl), our first camping site where a hearty dinner awaits.

Following a satisfying breakfast,  5-hour trek towards Maranpata, where we’ll pause for lunch while taking in the stunning views of Choquequirao.

Afterward, we’ll continue our hike for an additional two hours to reach the Choquequirao archaeological site and set up camp nearby. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy tea time followed by dinner.

Lodging: Campsite in Choquequirao

Significantly, this day holds great importance as we will thoroughly explore the Choquequirao archaeological complex, uncovering areas hidden by the dense vegetation of the cloud forest. Our guide will offer comprehensive insights into the site’s history and its significance in ancient times.

Following this guided tour, you’ll have leisure time to wander and discover the site independently. Lunch and dinner will be provided at our campsite, and we’ll spend the night in the same location as the previous evening.

Lodging: Campsite in Choquequirao

Indeed, we will embark on a lengthy descent towards the Apurimac River, where we’ll halt for our midday meal. Subsequently, we’ll commence a gradual ascent of approximately 3 to 4 hours towards our final campsite at Cocamasana (2300 m.a.s.l.), where we will enjoy our dinner. From this vantage point, we’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Choquequirao trail.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we’ll trek for approximately two hours to reach the Apurimac Canyon, offering us stunning photo opportunities.

This marks the conclusion of our trek, and we’ll continue our journey back to Cusco by bus.

Along the route, we’ll make a stop to admire the impressive Saywite stone, intricately carved by the Incas to depict their empire.
