DAY 1:
PISKACUCHO KM 82 – TO WAYLLABAMBATo kick off our journey along the classic Inca Trail trek, vicuñaperuexpeditions will arrange a pick-up for you from your accommodation in Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. Pick-ups in Cusco are scheduled between 4 to 5 AM, while those from Urubamba or Ollantaytambo will be confirmed during your briefing.
Following this, we’ll embark on a 1.5-hour private transport ride to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Upon reaching kilometer 82, the initial checkpoint of the Inca Trail, we will introduce you to our team. After crossing the Urubamba River bridge, our 4-day adventure on the classic Inca Trail commences.
The first day offers a gentle introduction to the trek, allowing you to acclimate gradually. Along the way, we’ll explore the ruins of Patallacta, a significant center with administrative, economic, and religious roles. Additionally, we’ll visit Willkarakay, a military outpost situated above Patallacta.
Subsequently, we’ll venture into the verdant valley of Wayllabamba, trekking alongside the Cusichaca (“happy bridge”) River and ascending gradually through the dense Andean forest. Our first day concludes as we reach our campsite in Wayllabamba.
DAY 2:
WAYLLABAMBA – DEAD WOMENS PASS – PACAYMAYUWe will kick off our day bright and early with the goal of reaching the highest point on the Inca Trail trek by day’s end: the Warmihuañusca Pass, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass.
The morning portion of the trek is physically demanding, especially for those not acclimated to high altitudes, but it offers some of the most breathtaking scenery. For the first leg of the hike to Machu Picchu, we will trek for approximately 1.5 hours through densely vegetated terrain until we reach the Three Stones campsite, where we’ll pause for a short break.
As we continue our ascent, the landscape will transition as we enter the inter-Andean forest filled with Unca trees. Two hours later, we’ll arrive at Llulluchapampa, another campsite, where we’ll take an extended break with snacks and hot beverages.
From Llulluchapampa, we embark on the final push to the Warmihuañusca Pass, the trek’s highest point. This offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the valleys below. After reaching the pass, we’ll descend for a few hours to our final campsite in Pacaymayu, where we’ll spend the night.
DAY 3:
PACAYMAYU – CHAQUIKOCHA – WIÑAYHUAYNAFollowing our descent from Pacaymayu, we’ll begin a 45-minute ascent to the archaeological site of Runkurakay, which served as a “tambo” or resting lodge for ancient pilgrims. Another 45-minute climb will lead us to the second-highest pass on the Inca Trail trek, also named Runkurakay. After this, we’ll descend to the stunning archaeological site of Sayacmarca, strategically located and rich in history.
After exploring Sayacmarca in detail, we’ll continue our trek along a beautifully paved path to our lunch spot at Chaquicocha. From Chaquicocha onwards to Phuyupatamarca, we’ll journey through the high Andean cloud forest, a breathtaking showcase of nature’s beauty.
The trail then continues along a narrow ridge until we reach the Phuyupatamarca Pass, a natural viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the Sacred Valley and numerous mountain peaks.
Following this, we’ll descend to our final campsite for the night, passing by an important archaeological site and temple dedicated to the sacred mountain spirits of the region. Just a short distance beyond is our campsite for the night, Wiñayhuayna.
DAY 4:
WIÑAY WAYNA TO MACHU PICCHUWe’ll start our day very early to complete the final stretch of the Peru Inca Trail, leading us to “Inti Punku” or the Sun Gate, the main entrance to the breathtaking city of Machu Picchu. This part of the trail is relatively easy-going and offers an incredible vantage point to observe Machu Picchu. Weather permitting, this will be the best time to experience the beauty of Machu Picchu.
Following this, a 45-minute descent will bring us to the upper area of Machu Picchu, a natural viewpoint perfect for the iconic classic photo and an opportunity for a group picture. Here, we’ll enter as a group through the main entrance for registration before embarking on the main tour of Machu Picchu.
The guided tour will last approximately 2 hours. The option to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain is available at an additional cost and must be booked in advance. In the afternoon, we’ll descend by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes.
You’ll meet your guide in Aguas Calientes for lunch and receive your train tickets for the return journey to Cusco. The train will arrive at Ollantaytambo, where our staff will pick you up to complete the remainder of your journey by bus back to your hotel in Cusco.
