DAY 1:
PISKACUCHO KM 82 – TO WAYLLABAMBATo begin our journey along the Classic Inca Trail, we will arrange a pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. If you’re staying in Cusco, pick-ups will be between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, while those from Urubamba or Ollantaytambo will be confirmed during your pre-trek briefing.
We’ll then embark on a 1.5-hour private transport ride to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Upon arriving at kilometer 82, the starting point and checkpoint of the Inca Trail, you’ll be introduced to our team of guides, porters, and chefs. Once we cross the Urubamba River bridge, our 4-day adventure on the Classic Inca Trail officially begins.
The first day provides a gentle introduction to the trek, helping you acclimate to the altitude. Along the way, we’ll explore the ruins of Patallacta, an important site that once served administrative, economic, and religious purposes in the Inca Empire. We’ll also visit Willkarakay, a strategic military outpost perched above Patallacta.
Continuing on, we’ll trek into the lush valley of Wayllabamba, following the Cusichaca River, also known as the “happy bridge” river. The trail ascends gradually through the dense Andean forest, offering you a chance to take in the rich natural surroundings. Our first day concludes at our campsite in Wayllabamba, where you can relax and enjoy the serene mountain atmosphere.
DAY 2:
WAYLLABAMBA – DEAD WOMENS PASS – PACAYMAYUWe’ll start our day bright and early, aiming to reach the highest point of the Inca Trail: the Warmihuañusca Pass, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass.
The morning portion of the trek is physically demanding, particularly for those who may not be fully acclimated to the high altitude. However, it also offers some of the most stunning scenery on the trail. We’ll begin by trekking for about 1.5 hours through densely vegetated terrain until we reach the Three Stones campsite, where we’ll take a short break.
As we continue our ascent, the landscape gradually changes as we enter the inter-Andean forest, characterized by its unique Unca trees. After about two hours, we’ll arrive at Llulluchapampa, another campsite, where we’ll pause for an extended break, enjoying snacks and hot beverages.
From Llulluchapampa, we will make the final push to the Warmihuañusca Pass, the highest point of the trek. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. After reaching the pass, we’ll begin our descent, which will take a few hours, leading us to our campsite in Pacaymayu, where we’ll settle in for the night.
DAY 3:
PACAYMAYU – CHAQUIKOCHA – WIÑAYHUAYNAAfter descending from Pacaymayu, we’ll begin a 45-minute climb to the archaeological site of Runkurakay, an ancient “tambo” or resting lodge used by Inca pilgrims. Another 45-minute ascent will bring us to the Runkurakay Pass, the second-highest point on the Inca Trail. From here, we’ll descend to the remarkable archaeological site of Sayacmarca, which is perched strategically on the mountainside and steeped in history.
Following an in-depth exploration of Sayacmarca, we’ll continue our trek along a beautifully paved path to our lunch spot at Chaquicocha. The journey from Chaquicocha to Phuyupatamarca takes us through the high Andean cloud forest, offering stunning views and a unique connection with nature.
The trail continues along a narrow ridge, leading us to the Phuyupatamarca Pass, a natural viewpoint with sweeping vistas of the Sacred Valley and surrounding mountain peaks. As we descend towards our final campsite, we’ll pass by an important archaeological site and temple dedicated to the sacred mountain spirits, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of the ancient Incas.
Just beyond this site, we’ll reach our campsite for the night at Wiñayhuayna, where we’ll rest and prepare for our final day on the trail.
DAY 4:
WIÑAY WAYNA TO MACHU PICCHUWe’ll begin our day very early to tackle the final stretch of the Peru Inca Trail, which leads to “Inti Punku,” or the Sun Gate, the main entrance to the awe-inspiring city of Machu Picchu. This part of the trail is relatively easy and offers a breathtaking vantage point to observe Machu Picchu in all its glory. If the weather cooperates, this will be the best opportunity to fully appreciate the beauty of the site.
After reaching Inti Punku, we’ll descend for about 45 minutes to the upper area of Machu Picchu, a natural viewpoint perfect for capturing the iconic classic photo of the city. It’s also a great spot for a group picture. From here, we’ll enter as a group through the main entrance for registration before embarking on a guided tour of Machu Picchu.
The guided tour will last approximately two hours, offering deep insights into the history, architecture, and significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. For those interested, there is an option to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain at an additional cost, which must be booked in advance.
In the afternoon, we’ll descend by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you’ll meet your guide for lunch and receive your train tickets for the return journey to Cusco. The train will take you to Ollantaytambo, where our staff will be waiting to transfer you by bus back to your hotel in Cusco.
OPTIONAL FOR THE CLASSIC INCA TRAIL TREK:
An extra night in Aguas Calientes can be arranged, which is a popular option among trekkers. This allows for more time to explore Machu Picchu (elevation 2,400 meters) and visit the local hot springs, offering a relaxing treat after completing the 4-day Inca Trail trek.
